The Importance of Nutritious Food Consumption Patterns in Adolescents to Maintain Body Mass Index (BMI) Within the Normal Range

Abstract

The quality of adolescent health plays an important role in improving the quality of Indonesia's human resources. Nowadays, teenagers like fast food consumption patterns. It is influenced by knowledge and environmental factors. Even though it is more practical, fast food can cause various health problems. Monitoring nutritional status through measuring body mass index (BMI) is one way to prevent health problems. This service aims to increase teenagers' knowledge regarding nutritious food consumption patterns to maintain BMI within the normal range. Service activities in the form of measuring BMI and counseling on nutritious food consumption patterns were given to 23 students of SMAN 1 Gerung. The measurement results showed that 10 people were in the underweight category, 12 people were normal, and 1 person was overweight. After being given counseling, there was an increase in knowledge which was marked by the students' ability to answer questions correctly. Through this outreach activity, it is hoped that students will pay more attention to the food they consume to keep their BMI values ​​within the normal range.
